Clinical Coaching
Clinical coaching is a structured, collaborative conversation that helps a person think more clearly, choose more deliberately, and act more consistently – especially when they’re at a crossroads, stuck in patterns, or trying to grow into a bigger role.
What Coaching Is Really About?
Coaching is a structured, collaborative conversation that helps a person think more clearly, choose more deliberately, and act more consistently – especially when they’re at a crossroads, stuck in patterns, or trying to grow into a bigger role. A widely used professional definition comes from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), which describes coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
That single sentence contains the core of what coaching is:
- Partnering (not “fixing” or “directing”)
- Thought-provoking + creative (new perspectives, not just advice)
- Maximizing potential (strengths, agency, values, goals, behaviour change)
What Coaching Is Not
Coaching often gets confused with adjacent helping professions:
- Therapy: focuses on diagnosis/treatment of mental health conditions, trauma, symptomrelief, and healing; coaching can support wellbeing but does not replace clinical care.
- Consulting: the expert analyses and recommends solutions; coaching helps the clientgenerate their own best solutions and grow capacity.
- Mentoring: guidance from someone who has “been there”; coaching may include strategicreflection but stays anchored in the client’s agenda and insight.
Introducing The Co-Active Institute (CTI) Approach
At Elemental Health, we build on the Co-Active approach that has popularized a style of coaching built around relationship, presence, and client agency. In CTI’s own framing, Co-Active is a relational model – a way of engaging that brings forth human potential through authentic connection and the assumption that the answers are already within the person (and the relationship).
A key Co-Active belief is that people are “naturally creative, resourceful, and whole.” (Co-Active Training Institute) Practically, this shifts coaching away from “what’s wrong with you?” and toward:
- What’s already true about you that you’re not using fully yet?
- What values are you betraying (or honoring) in this situation?
- What choice are you avoiding – and what would it cost to keep avoiding it
- What’s the real conversation underneath the surface conversation?
The 4 Principles We Emphasize
People are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole
The coach walks the talk and practices presence and self-awareness
The coach focuses on the whole person (not just the “problem”)
Coaching aims for transformative outcomes through both small changes and bigger shifts
Our clients often feel a difference: it’s less “performance improvement talk” and more “whole-human transformation through conversation.”
“A Gold standard in Coaching”
~ Dr. Carol Kauffman, Founder and Director of the Institute of Coaching based at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate), and a long-time member of Harvard Medical School faculty.
How This “Gold Standard In Coaching” Serves You
-
It’s principle-based, not script-based
We work from assumptions about human capability and wholeness, rather than relying on a rigid step-by-step formula. This tends to generalize well across contexts: executives, healthcare, relationships, life transitions and corporations.
-
Emphasis on deep relational skill (not just “goal chasing”)
We believe in a relational model - the quality of attention, connection, and presence is central, not optional. This matters because many coaching outcomes (clarity, courage, follow-through) are mediated by trust, psychological safety, and honest reflection - not merely by better plans.
-
Alignment with research-informed coaching
Our coaches adhere to ICF’s and CTI’s credentialing routes and education standards (e.g., structured education hours and evaluation components). Our approaches are congruent with continuing studies in positive psychology and coaching research.
What Coaching Looks Like In Practice
A typical session tends to include:
- Clarifying the “real topic” (often beneath the presenting issue)
- Working with the whole person: values, emotions, identity, relationships, body signals -not just tasks (Co-Active Training Institute)
- Powerful questions + reflection
- Skill building and developmentDepending on the client’s goals, the coach may introduce various tools, techniques, andexercises to help the client develop new skills, change unhelpful behaviours, and adopthealthier options.
- Choice + commitmentDesigning actions that fit who the person is.
- Accountability that supports agency, not compliance
Clients often report that this style helps them:
- Stop looping in rumination,
- Name what they truly want (vs. what they “should” want),
- Choose with integrity,
- Take braver action with less self-betrayal.
Coaching Goals?
A life coach helps you spot patterns in your thoughts and behaviours that may no longer serve you – and supports you in building healthier, more effective ways of thinking and problem-solving.
Because everyone’s definition of success is different, coaching goals are always personal. Together, you and your coach may focus on areas such as:
- Practicing Emotional & Social Intelligence
- Acing Public Speaking skills and thinking on your feet
- Staying in – Peak Performance / your Element / your Zone
- Tapping on your Performance Enjoyment factors at work and in life (Harrison Assessment)
- Discovering and living your Ikigai (reason for being)
- Strengthening communication to build more meaningful relationships
- Improving time management for better work-life fulfilment
- Building confidence at work and in relationships
- Growing self-esteem in both personal and professional life
- Exploring fears and insecurities through honest self-examination
- Encouraging thinking styles that spark creativity and fresh ideas
- Developing budgeting and planning skills for greater financial stability
In short
Coaching is a professional partnership that helps you unlock clarity, growth, and move forward in a way that feels aligned with who you are and where you want to go.
